A Los Angeles Couples Therapist Gives Suggestions on Where to Recharge

As a Los Angeles couples therapist, one of the first things I talk with arguing couples about is fighting fair agreements. These are agreements on how we’ll treat our partner during an argument. These fighting-fair arrangements are best established during couples therapy to ensure everyone is clear on the expectations.

One of the first things I suggest is taking time-outs. These are purposeful breaks designed for each partner to calm, center, reflect, and regulate. I always advise that timeouts be given an end time when they are called. It would sound something like, “I’m feeling activated.  Let’s take a timeout until 5 pm.” This end time helps set an expectation for an anxious partner of when reconnection will happen and also prevents an endless couple’s argument.

In the ebb and flow of relationships, maintaining a strong and healthy connection often requires intentional effort. Couples therapy, time-outs, and the art of fighting fair are essential tools in the toolkit of any couple striving for long-lasting love

During timeouts, where is a good place to go in Los Angeles to meditate, calm down, and reflect? As a couples therapist, here are some places I recommend.
